happy and new

Happy first day of the year! There's something so clear and hopeful about these first hours; so full of possibilities.
Hope you're making plans! My 2016 resolutions are to keep checking things off my to-read and to-watch wishlist. I'm sure my excitement for my space fandoms—The Martian and the Star Wars—will carry me through at least until the Civil War comes out :))
So, Star Wars impressions:
My biggest apprehension was that Force Awakens wouldn't have a heart - but it had, in bucketloads! However, because the plot mostly happens on the frontier planets and in deep space, TFA came a little short in the worldbuilding department to me. I missed many sprawling worlds and gorgeous costumes of the prequels.
LOVED REY, SO MUCH. Yes, she's gifted and brave, but she's also sheltered and naive and largely self-centered, and urgh, those abandonment issues. Also, Gwendolyne Christie as the shiniest Capt Phasma and Lupita's great voice role brought me so much joy.
My two other faves are Finnnnnn (I need moar backstory! he's so endearing, and earnest, and perfectly imperfect, and such a good egg) and a fine new branch on the Skywalker family tree - Kylo Ren, who reminds me of Anakin on his worst teenage day. Such an unexpected villain, with unexpected motivations.
Oddly enough, my slowly emerging ships are Finn/Rey and Leia/Poe. And Finn/Phasma (where's the fic of Finn polishing Phasma's shiny chrome armor? ...and more *wiggles eyebrows*), and Kylo/maximum!screentime.
I didn't have time to get into the fandom yet, but whatever passes by my dash, looks AMAAAAZINGGG.
♥
A couple of fun links on this New Year's Day:
• Kylo Ren's emo twitter - unbelievably hilarious, updated regularly, and has gems like "dad the wookiee used all my garnier fructis"; "when Darth Vader changed his name i bet they were jerks about it too; people are small like that"; and "my mom has done a lot of crazy things with her hair but i strive for more of a classic look myself".
• My 52 Weeks with Christie - focused on Agatha Christie's AMAZING pulp 70s covers and other goodness; if you share my strange addiction to Christie and the crazy, lurid 70s artworks, that's for you.
And for Yuletide '15, I wrote this: The Unwritten Book of Jack, [Kings | Jack/David]
--- it was a lot of fun to play with the amnesia trope! I seem to be working through SebStan's imdb entry :DDD - Hot Tub Machine for Yuletide '16!!!(GOD I HOPE NOT)
♥
Again, please give tons of love to my gifts. Somehow, all three of them managed to be these unexpected One Day Your Fic Will Come wish fulfilments: Elementary and two True Detective stories.

Date: 2016-01-04 08:47 pm (UTC)Christmas is all about happy, cozy, and sweet, and it was a refreshing shot of edgy and different. I liked the contrast so much, I'm considering signing up for Crueltide next year. It's all part of Yuletide, you just leave a note on a relevant post, saying that for Canon X, you wouldn't mind these and these horrible things happening. Now that I got apocafic, maybe I could wish for my other fave - cosmic horror.
You should totally try Taylor's parts of True D S2. That sweet porn piece would read even sweeter :)
And gosh, my Elementary gift has done so well, and so it should!

Date: 2016-01-05 01:33 am (UTC)You're in a great company if you like Finnpoe. I feel like everyone around me is shipping it, and I'm loving the excitement! I don't know what's wrong with my brain but I came out with strong m/f urges and Kylo crack.
Leia/Poe: I started shipping it like crazy after I read this gem: http://archiveofourown.org/works/5550473
LOLed at pew-pewing! And yeah, I think there's plenty of time to slow down and worldbuild in the next movie. I just miss the civilized worlds and hundreds of crazy aliens in bustling metropolises. I have this glossy prequels fashion book and it's so thick with all the OTT costume pics, you can use it for self-defense. I want that for our new movies!

Date: 2016-01-05 11:32 pm (UTC)Thank youuuu!! I can't wait to read :D
Sadly there were not enough costumes to fill a book. But that book you have sounds beautiful. I was excited for that one bar scene with Finn, Rey, Chewie, and Han but it was pretty short-lived.
